This standard applies to indirect resistance heating equipment and direct resistance heating equipment operating in the first and second voltage ranges specified in the following items a) and b) respectively. The purpose of this standard is to standardize the safety requirements for indirect and direct heating equipment described below. a) Indirect resistance heating equipment These special requirements apply to equipment for indirect resistance heating, which are supplied by direct voltage or single-phase or multi-phase alternating voltage with a frequency up to 60 Hz. Heat is produced by the flow of electrical current in solid metallic heating conductors, solid non-metallic heating conductors, and in radiant tubes and immersion heaters. Indirect resistance heating equipment usually includes: - Discontinuous furnace, that is, batch furnace. Such as muffle furnace, crucible road, pit furnace, bell furnace, trolley furnace, fluid particle furnace, metal bath furnace with immersion heater, etc. - Continuous furnaces with continuous or discontinuous charge conveyors. Such as roller hearth furnace, push furnace, walking furnace, drum furnace, rotary hearth furnace, tunnel furnace (kiln), continuous muffle furnace, etc. Indirect resistance heating equipment usually also includes: - equipment for heating solids, liquids or gases; - melting and holding equipment; - individual heating element assemblies (movable or fixed heaters). Indirect resistance heating equipment in which special hazards may arise include: - Nitrite bath furnaces. - indirect resistance heating equipment that may generate an explosive atmosphere in the furnace during heat treatment. Such as a furnace for carburizing in a combined atmosphere of hydrogen and methane or propane and carbon monoxide. - indirect resistance heating equipment with a protective (eg argon) and/or reducing atmosphere. Such as furnaces for gas carburizing, gas nitriding, and carbonitriding. - equipment with infrared heating elements. These requirements do not apply to profiled heating systems covered in IEC 60519-10-2005. b) Direct resistance heating equipment These special requirements also apply to equipment for direct resistance heating through the charge or fluid to be heated by means of an electric current introduced from the electrodes. These equipment include: - Electrode salt bath furnace; - Glass melting furnace; - Graphitization furnace; - Furnace for producing silicon carbide. These requirements do not apply to equipment for direct resistance heating due to the process used in GB 5959.3-2008, GB 5959.2-2008, GB 5959.8-2007 and GB 5959.41-2004. Also, they are not suitable for electrode steam boilers, flash water heaters and electrode pressure vessels.
