The source text management module contains the COPY statement and the REPLACE statement. Each statement can be used independently or in conjunction with another statement, providing the ability to insert and replace the source program text as part of source program compilation. COBOL libraries contain text that is available to the compiled program at compile time. The effect of the COPY statement interpretation is to produce, from the library text, a text that is considered by the compiled program to be part of the source program. Similarly, COBOL source programs can be written using programmer-defined notations that expand into syntactically correct phrases, clauses, and statements at compile time. The result of the interpretation of the REPLACE statement is to replace the text that appears in the source program with the new text. And make the text of the substitution as part of the source program for the compiler.
