This standard specifies recommended procedures for life testing of high-speed steel, cemented carbide, and ceramic single-edged turning tools for turning steel and cast iron. The test involves the specification of the following factors: workpiece, cutting tool, cutting fluid, cutting condition, equipment, evaluation of tool failure and tool life, test procedure and recording, evaluation and reporting of results. This standard does not specify acceptance tests. In turning tests, the following two types of cutting conditions are considered: a) conditions in which failure is mainly due to wear, which is the main consideration in this standard; b) conditions in which failure is due to other phenomena, such as cutting edge fracture or plastic deformation condition, this condition needs further study. This standard is applicable to the life test of single-edge turning tools in laboratory and production practice, see Appendix A.
