This standard specifies the recommended procedures for tool life testing when high-speed steel end mills are used for milling steel and cast iron parts. It is applicable to laboratories and actual production. This standard stipulates the specifications for the following three types of end milling tests: a) slot milling (see Figure 1); b) end milling mainly for peripheral tooth cutting-side milling (see Figure 2); c) end tooth cutting Cutting-based end milling - end milling (see Figure 3). Cutting conditions can be considered in the following two types for end milling: a) Conditions in which the tool fails mainly due to wear; b) Conditions in which the tool fails mainly due to other phenomena, such as cutting edge fracture or plastic deformation. Experiments with this type of condition are under study. This standard only considers the recommended values for tests focusing on tool wear. For each type of test, recommended values are given for the following factors: workpiece, tool, cutting fluid, cutting conditions, equipment, evaluation of tool failure and tool life, test procedure, and recording, evaluation, and reporting of results. This standard applies to the life test of high-speed steel end mills.
