This standard specifies the recommended procedure for cutting steel and iron castings with high-speed steel end mills for tool life testing. It is applicable to laboratories and actual production. This standard stipulates the specifications for the following three types of end milling tests: a) Slot milling; b) End milling mainly for peripheral tooth cutting-side milling; C) End milling mainly for end tooth cutting-end milling . Cutting conditions can be considered in the following two types in end milling: a) conditions in which the tool fails mainly due to wear; b) conditions in which the tool fails mainly due to other phenomena, such as cutting edge fracture or plastic deformation. This standard only considers the recommended values for tests mainly based on tool wear. Trials of the second type of conditions described above are under investigation. For each type of test, recommended values are specified for the following factors: workpiece, tool, cutting fluid, cutting conditions, equipment, evaluation of tool failure and tool life, test procedure, and recording, evaluation, and reporting of results.
