Scope
The directory provides directory capabilities required by OSI application processes, OSI management processes, other OSI layer entities, and telecommunications services. Capabilities it provides include: "user-friendly naming", whereby objects can be referred to by names that are memorized by human users (although not all objects need to have user-friendly names); "mapping between names and addresses" , which allows dynamic binding between objects and locations. For example, the latter capability allows an OSI network to be "self-configuring", adding, deleting, and updating the location of objects without affecting the operation of the OSI network. A directory is not a general-purpose database system, although it can be built on top of such a system. For example, for a typical communication directory, it is generally assumed that "search" occurs rather frequently than "update". The frequency of "updates" is dynamically managed by individuals and organizations, not by the network. Also, there is no need to commit to instant updates to global information, and it is perfectly acceptable to have transient transition states where both old and new versions of the same information are available. In addition to differentiated access rights or updated results that do not propagate, another feature of the directory is that its directory search results will not depend on the identity or location of the searcher. This feature makes the directory unsuitable for some telecommunication applications, such as some routing-type applications. Access and updates to directory information can be denied where results depend on the identity of the searcher.
