Scope
The purpose of this open system interconnection reference model standard is to provide a common basis for the formulation of various standards for coordinated system interconnection, and at the same time, enable existing standards to be reflected in the entire reference model. The term Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) is limited to standards for exchanging information between systems that are "open" to each other by combining the appropriate standards. The fact that the system is open does not imply a special system implementation, nor does it imply an interconnection technology or method, but means that each system recognizes and supports appropriate standards. Another purpose of this reference model is to define the scope for developing or revising a standard and to provide a common reference for maintaining the compatibility of all related standards. This reference model is neither intended as a specification nor as a basis for qualifying implementation-specific conformance, nor does it provide exhaustive details of the services and protocols that precisely define the interconnection architecture. This reference model only provides a conceptual and functional framework, enabling relevant experts to work creatively and independently when developing standards for each layer of the OSI reference model. This reference model has sufficient flexibility to adapt to the development of technology and user requirements and expansion. This flexibility is also to enable the existing implementation to gradually transition to conform to the OSI standard. Although the general architectural principles of OSI are very broad in scope, this standard is primarily concerned with systems consisting of terminals, computers and related equipment, and the means of conveying information between these systems. OSI others that require attention are also briefly described (see 4.2). This standard describes the basic OSI reference model logically; Chapter 4 presents the rationale for Open Systems Interconnection, defines the objects to be connected and the scope of the interconnection, and describes the modeling principles used in OSI. Chapter 5 describes the general nature of the reference model architecture, that is, that the model is layered, what the layers mean, and the principles used to describe the layers. Chapter 6 names and describes the layers of the architecture. Chapter 7 describes the layers. Chapter 8 describes the management aspects of OSI. Clause 9 specifies conformance and compatibility with the OSI reference model. Guidelines for the selection of layers are given in Appendix A of this basic reference model. In addition to the basic aspects, other aspects of this reference model are divided into several parts to describe. Part 1 describes the basic reference model. Part 2 describes the OSI security architecture. Part 3 describes OSI naming and addressing. Part 4 describes OSI management. The base reference model is a framework for defining services and protocols within the scope identified by the reference model. In a few cases, an option clearly marked in this basic reference model is still an option in the corresponding service or agreement (even if the two situations of the option have not been written at that time). This reference model does not specify OSI services and protocols. It is neither an implementation specification for the system nor a basis for identifying conformance. For standards that meet OSI requirements, a small number of practical subsets can be defined from optional functions to facilitate implementation and compatibility.
