Scope

This standard defines OSI network services in the following aspects: a) the primitive actions and events of the service; b) the parameters associated with each primitive action and event and the form they take; c) the behavior of these primitive actions and the interrelationships between events and their effective sequences. The main purposes of this standard are to: a) Specify the conceptual characteristics of network services, thus supplementing the reference model to guide the development of network layer protocols. b) Encourage convergence in functionality provided by subnet providers. c) Provide a basis for enhancing existing heterogeneous subnets into common subnet-independent network services so that they can be concatenated to provide global communications (such concatenation may involve optional Additional features). The definition of service quality is an important part of the standard. d) Provide a basis for the development and implementation of subnet-independent transport layer protocols, thus freeing them from the diversity of underlying public and private subnets and their special interface requirements. This standard does not specify specific implementations and products, nor does it limit the implementation of entities and interfaces within the system. For this standard, there is no equipment consistency issue. Conformance is achieved through implementations that adhere to the OSI network protocols. OSI network protocols satisfy the network services defined in this standard.
