This International Standard specifies a number of attribute types that are useful in various directory applications. Attribute types (and attribute syntax) can be divided into three categories, which are described in 1.2.1 to 1.2.3 respectively. There are attribute types (and attribute syntaxes) that can be used by various directory applications, or recognized and/or used by the directory itself. Note: Whenever appropriate, it is recommended to use the attribute types (and attribute syntax) defined in this document before generating a new attribute type. Some attribute types (and attribute syntax) are internationally standardized, but are a particular application. These attribute types (and attribute syntax) are defined in the standards relevant to the application in question. Any utility can specify its own attribute types (and attribute syntax). Obviously, neither this attribute type (nor attribute syntax) is an international standard, so it should only be applied after consultation with other utilities.
