This standard defines the names and addresses and basic mechanisms used in OSIE to identify and locate objects. The use of these mechanisms is defined in the hierarchy of the base reference model. This standard extends the concepts and criteria defined in GB9387-88. This standard is neither intended to be an implementation specification, nor is it intended to be a basis for evaluating implementation consistency. The canonical form of names and addresses is outside the scope of this standard.
