Scope
This document specifies the method for measuring the total radiated sound power of an ultrasonic transducer based on the use of a radiation force balance; clarifies the principle of intercepting the sound field to be measured by the target and uses the radiation force balance for measurement; clarifies the radiation force method when cavitation and temperature rise occur. Limitations of use in case; clarifies the quantitative use limitations of the radiation force method in the case of divergent and focused beams; provides information on the use of the radiation force method to estimate the acoustic power of divergent and focused beams; provides information on the evaluation of all measurement uncertainties. This document applies to: a) measurement of ultrasonic power not exceeding 1 W within the frequency range of 0.5 MHz to 25 MHz using a radiation force balance; b) measurement of ultrasonic power not exceeding 20 W within the frequency range of 0.75 MHz to 5 MHz using a radiation force balance Measurement of ultrasonic power; c) measurement of total ultrasonic power in parallel, diverging and focused ultrasonic fields; d) measurement using a gravity or force feedback radiation force balance. (see A.1). Note 1: The focused beam converges in the section before the focus and diverges after the focus. Note 2: In the range of high-intensity therapeutic ultrasound (HITU), that is, the measurement of ultrasound power exceeding 1 W or exceeding 20 W, respectively, is handled by IEC 62555. Radiation force is equal to the change in time-averaged momentum flow [4], and is therefore related to ultrasonic intensity and power. This relationship also depends on the details of the sound field and target. a.
