Scope
This International Standard specifies a laboratory method for the simultaneous determination of the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and the water retention capacity of a soil. It can only be used to determine the drying or desorption curve. Application is limited to soil samples that are as homogeneous as possible. It is not applicable to soils that can shrink within the following matrix heights: hm = 0 cm to hm = -800 cm. The determination range of conductivity depends on the soil type. It lies between matrix heights of approximately hm = -50 cm and hm = -700 cm. The determination range of the water retention capacity is approximately between hm = 0 cm and hm = -800 cm. NOTE 1 An infiltrometer method can be used to determine the hydraulic conductivity near the saturated region. NOTE 2 ISO 11274 contains methods for determining the water retention capacity at matrix heights between 0 cm and -15000 cm.
