Scope
This standard specifies the performance requirements for protective coating systems used on offshore structures and related structures, ie those structures exposed to the marine atmosphere and immersed in salt or brackish water. These structures are exposed to the environment of C5-M corrosiveness level and Im2 immersion level defined in ISO 12944-2. The special stresses in these corrosive environments are described in 4.3 and Appendix B of ISO 12944-2:1998. This standard is also applicable to other building structures using paint or protective paint systems complying with this standard. This standard focuses on high durability coating systems in order to achieve the purpose of minimizing maintenance costs, and thus reduce safety expenditures and environmental impact. This standard specifies additional test requirements in addition to those used in ISO 12944-6 for corrosivity class C5-M. Therefore, coating systems that meet the high durability requirements of class C5-M in ISO 12944-6 may not meet the requirements of this standard and may require further testing. The applicable temperature range of these coating systems is generally -20 ℃ ~ 80 ℃, and the performance test is also to confirm the adaptability of the coating system in this temperature range. Use of coating systems outside this temperature range should be approved by the end user. These approvals shall include testing at suitable temperatures. Coating systems for immersion conditions (Im2) are intended for ambient temperatures up to 50 °C. For higher ambient temperatures, specific evaluation and performance descriptions are required. The performance requirements selected for investigation should be considered in combination with the design parameters of cathodic protection. This standard includes: - test methods for determining the composition of the different components of protective paint systems; - laboratory performance test methods for assessing the expected durability of protective paint systems; - guidelines for evaluating the results of performance tests.
