This International Standard specifies principles of ergonomics in the form of basic guidelines for the design of work systems and defines the relevant fundamental terms. It describes an integrated approach to the design of work systems in which work scientists collaborate with others involved in the design and give balanced attention to human, social and technical requirements during the design process. Users of this International Standard will include directors, managers, workers (and, where applicable, their representatives) and professionals such as ergonomics scientists, project managers and developers who are involved in the design or redesign of work systems. General knowledge of ergonomics (work science), technology and design as well as quality and project management can be helpful for users of this International Standard. The term "work system" is used in this International Standard to describe a variety of work situations, including both fixed and flexible workstations. The aim of this International Standard is to help improve, design/redesign or change work systems. Work systems include the interaction of workers and work equipment within a specific space and a specific environment and the interaction of these components within a work organization. The complexity and properties of work systems are different, for example when using temporary work systems. Some examples of work systems in different areas are the following:
——Production, e.g. B. Machine operator and machine, worker and assembly line;
——Transportation, e.g. B. Driver and car or truck, staff in an airport;
——Support, e.g. B. Maintenance technicians with work equipment;
——trade, e.g. B. Office worker with a computer workstation, mobile worker with tablet computer, cook in a restaurant kitchen;
——other areas, such as healthcare, teaching and training. Compliance with ergonomic principles affects the entire life cycle of the work system, from conception through development, implementation and introduction, use, maintenance and user support to decommissioning. With its systems approach, this International Standard supports users of this International Standard in both existing and new situations.
