The tuning of feedback controllers is part of the overall commissioning of plants and machines. On account of the special properties of control loops (feedback structure which can become unstable with unsuitable setting of controller parameters), the commissioning person needs special knowledge for making such settings. Various compact controllers and process control systems provide integrated or PC-based systems to support the tuning of feedback controllers. The standard classifies performance parameters of tuning systems. Tuning systems are to be considered as independent or integrated products. Manufacturers of such systems are given the possibility to evaluate their tuning tool. With the description of tuning in form of a flow chart, users and manufacturers can classify and evaluate tuning systems.
