Scope

This standard specifies the operating conditions, performance requirements, test methods, inspection rules and markings of spark gaps (hereinafter referred to as spark gaps or gaps) used for series capacitor compensation devices in AC transmission systems. This standard applies to controlled trigger type (forced trigger type) spark gaps. The series compensation device uses a controlled trigger spark gap in conjunction with other protection equipment to quickly bypass (protect) the capacitor bank and the metal oxide voltage limiter (MOV).
