EN ISO 13856-1:2013 Safety of machinery - Pressure-sensitive protective devices - Part 1: General principles for design and testing of pressuresensitive mats and pressure-sensitive floors [Superseded: CEN EN 1760-1]
This part of ISO 13856 establishes general principles and specifies requirements for the design and testing of safety mats and switch plates, which are typically foot-operated and are used as non-separating protective devices to protect people from hazards posed by machinery. The minimum safety requirements are specified in terms of performance characteristics, labeling and documentation. This part of ISO 13856 applies, regardless of the energy used (e.g. electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical), to safety mats and switch plates designed to protect persons with a body weight over 35 kg; and people (e.g. children) with a body weight of over 20 kg. This part of ISO 13856 does not apply to the detection of persons weighing less than 20 kg. This part of ISO 13856 does not specify the following application-related points: a) the dimensions and configurations of the effective actuation area of the safety mat(s) or circuit board(s) with regard to a particular application; b) when safety mats or switching plates are to be considered suitable in a certain situation; c) Performance Levels (PLs) for safety-related parts of controls (SRP/CSs) that go beyond the required minimum level. This part of ISO 13856 provides guidance to assist the user (ie the manufacturer and/or the user of the machine) in determining an appropriate arrangement.
