This part of ISO 23611 provides guidance for planning field surveys of soil invertebrates (e.g. to monitor the quality of a soil as a habitat for organisms). Detailed information on sampling the most common soil organisms is provided in the other parts of this International Standard (ISO 23611-1 to ISO 23611-5). This part of ISO 23611 is applicable to all terrestrial biotopes in which soil-dwelling invertebrates occur. Basic information for planning field studies in general is already presented in ISO 10381-1. This information may vary depending on national requirements or climatic/regional conditions of the location to be sampled. NOTE Although this part of ISO 23611 is intended to be globally applicable to all terrestrial sites inhabited by soil invertebrates, the present information mostly refers to regions with temperate climates. However, the (few) studies from other (tropical and boreal) regions as well as theoretical considerations allow us to conclude that the principles set out in this part of ISO 23611 are generally applicable. This part of ISO 23611 contains information on site-specific risk assessment of contaminated areas, the investigation of possible side effects of anthropogenic influences (e.g. the use of chemicals or the construction of roads), the biological classification and assessment of soil to determine biological quality of soil and about long-term biogeographical observation in connection with nature conservation or recultivation projects, including global changes (e.g. as in the long-term ecological research project).
