The Manufacturing Message Specification is an industrial automation application layer standard to support bidirectional message communication of programmable devices in a computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) environment. 1.1 Definitions This part of ISO 10000 defines: a) the procedures of a single protocol for the transfer of data and control information from an application entity to a peer application entity in the MMS-Context. B) The selection method of the service used by the application entity when communicating in the MMS context. C) The structure of the manufacturing message specification protocol data unit used to transmit data and control information. 1.2 Process A process is defined by the following parties: a) Interaction between application entities of the same layer by exchanging application protocol data units of manufacturing messages. B) Interaction between MMS provider and MMS-user in the same system by exchanging MMS primitives. C) The interaction between the MMS provider and the abstract services provided by the underlying communication system. 1.3 Applicability These procedures are applicable in the application layer of the OSI reference model to support communication instances between MMS systems that require interconnection capabilities in the Open Systems Interconnection environment. 1.4 Conformance This standard also specifies the conformance requirements for systems that perform these processes. But it does not contain tests to verify compliance with these requirements.
