Scope
This standard specifies the tensile test method for metallic materials at the temperature of liquid helium (the boiling point is -269 °C or 4.2 K, designated as 4 K), and specifies the mechanical properties that can be measured. This standard is also applicable to low temperature (temperature below -196 °C or 77 K) tensile tests that require special equipment, smaller specimens, and involve zigzag yielding, adiabatic heating, and strain rate effects. In order to perform tensile tests at the test temperature of 4 K specified in this standard, the specimens are mounted in a cryostat and completely immersed in liquid helium (He). The test adopts displacement control so that the nominal strain rate during the test is not higher than 10s. The use of stress-controlled or higher strain rates will not be considered within the scope of this standard.
