Scope: This standard specifies the requirements, suggestions and methods for the manufacture, testing and selection of thread compound used in the joints of ISO/API round thread and buttress thread casing, oil pipe and line pipe. The tests outlined in this standard are used to evaluate the critical service performance of thread compounds and their physical and chemical properties under laboratory conditions. This standard test method is mainly used for thread grease formulated with lubricating base grease. For some other materials used in the lubrication and (or) sealing of threaded connections, these tests are not suitable. This standard does not apply to the evaluation of thread compound used in rotary shoulder connections, and its evaluation method is described in API RP 7A1. This standard does not address environmental issues related to the use and disposal of thread compound.
