Scope: This standard specifies the volume structure and labeling of tapes used for information exchange between users of information processing systems. This standard also specifies: - volume and file structure; - block basic characteristics (these blocks contain the records that make up the file); - record labels that identify the tape's files, file segments and volumes; - four nested exchanges level. In addition, this standard specifies requirements for procedures provided in information handling systems to enable information to be exchanged between different systems that utilize recording tapes as the exchange medium. For this reason, this standard specifies the functionality to be provided by systems intended to originate or receive tape volumes conforming to this standard.
