- 1.1 This standard is one of a series of standards concerning the sampling and testing of paints, varnishes and related products. This standard specifies a method for determining the hardness of a paint film by pushing a pencil of known hardness grade on the paint film. This test can be carried out on a single coat of paints, varnishes and related products, or on the top coat of a multi-coat system. 1.2 This rapid and economical test method is valid for comparing the pencil hardness of different coatings. This method is more effective in providing relative ratings for a series of painted panels with significant differences in pencil hardness. This method is only suitable for smooth surfaces.
