Scope: This document specifies a method for determining the hardness of paint films by pushing a pencil of known hardness across the paint film. This document applies to the determination of the film hardness of a single coating of paints, varnishes and related products, and also applies to the determination of the hardness of the top layer of a multi-coating. This document is not intended to compare the pencil hardness of different paint films. This document is intended to provide relative ratings for a series of painted test panels with appreciable differences in pencil hardness. This document applies only to the determination of the hardness of paint films on smooth surfaces.
