Scope: This standard establishes a general framework for describing the life cycle of artificial systems, and defines a set of processes and related terms from an engineering perspective. These procedures can be applied at all levels of the system structure. Throughout the life cycle, the selected process set can be applied to each stage of the management and operation system life cycle. This is accomplished through the participation of all parties involved in the system with the ultimate goal of achieving customer satisfaction. This International Standard also provides processes to support the definition, control and improvement of life cycle processes in an organization or project. Organizations and projects can use these life cycle processes when acquiring and provisioning systems. This International Standard deals with one or more artificial systems that can be configured by the following elements: hardware, software, data, people, processes (such as those that provide services to users), procedures (such as operating instructions), facilities, supplies, and naturally occurring entities.
