Scope
  What is BS 6164 - S afety in tunnelling   about? BS 6164 deals with the safety of those engaged in the tunnelling process and of those who could be affected by it. Who is  BS 6164 -   S afety in tunnelling  for? Everyone involved in tunnelling projects. Why should you use  BS 6164 -   S afety in tunnelling ? BS 6164 makes recommendations for and gives guidance on health and safety practices in shaft sinking and tunnel construction. BS 6164 includes health and safety recommendations that are also relevant to cut-and-cover tunnelling, immersed tube tunnels and other forms of underground construction as well as to the maintenance, renovation and repair of shafts and tunnels. NOTE: The recommendations is this standard are not intended to apply to the construction of shafts or tunnels for the purpose of mineral extraction. What’s changed since the last update? This British Standard replaces  BS 6164:2011 , which is withdrawn. The revision takes into account the advances in technology and equipment available to the tunnelling industry as well as new techniques and the effect of changes in legislation and guidance relating to health and safety and environmental matters. NOTE: There is an error in Table 8 of BS 6164:2019, in which the exposure limits for sulfur dioxide have been incorrectly stated.
