FOREWORD The material included herein has been prepared by an American petroleum Institute Subcommittee on Recording of Logging Signals for Data Processing. This subcommittee had its beginning in 1958 when application of electronic data processing and computing machines to well log correlation and interpretation became of industry interest. After preliminary discussion and review by interested and knowledgeable people@ it became apparent that any effort the API made toward standardization of computer application in the field of well logging must be restricted initially to the record of the data to be used (the recording of the logging signal). Other areas of interest were changing so rapidly or were so new that any effort toward standardization would have been impossible or@ at least@ premature. Then@ as deliberations of the subcommittee proceeded@ it became apparent that even standardization of the logging signal and its record would necessarily be incomplete as reflected in this recommendation. Because of varying status of techniques and technology in different organizations@ the following recommendations contained herein are too vague to please some people and too specific to please others. They do@ however@ represent a compromise of the feeling of the sub-committee membership.
