Scope
This standard specifies requirements for safety devices and protective equipment that enable compressors to avoid accidents caused by overpressure, destructive mechanical failure, internal fire or explosion, and leakage of toxic and flammable fluids. This standard also gives hazardous situations specific to certain compressors and general safety practices. This standard applies to compressors and their ancillary equipment, including drivers, intercoolers, buffers, separators (cylinders) or purifiers, intermediate connecting pipelines and lubrication, sealing oil and water jacket systems. The requirements of this standard apply to all types of compressors (centrifugal, axial, rotary and reciprocating) which are an integral part of process equipment in the petroleum, petrochemical or chemical industry, including air separation plants. This standard does not apply to general-purpose air compressors. Although the provisions of this standard apply to most commonly used process compressors, exceptions may be made for certain uniquely designed or complex equipment. In this case, the designer is expected to conduct a complete and rigorous analysis of the system's requirements and develop security details. The provisions of this standard are not intended to be used in the following situations: a) Basic mechanical design of compressor components. This standard is based on the premise that compressor components are designed by qualified engineers in accordance with recognized standards and specifications. Furthermore, these engineers must have comprehensive basic knowledge required to design equipment components such as cylinders, pistons, crankshafts, flywheels, bearings, pressure vessels, and pipelines. b) Design and operation of relevant process equipment. Safe operating practices (principles) that contribute to the safe operation of process compressors, not just new compressor systems. Taking into account possible changes due to revisions to this standard, it is recommended that the entire compressor system be reviewed.
