1 This International Standard sets out the basic requirements for the specification and testing of air/surface (intermodal) containers for general cargo, which are suitable for international exchange and for conveyance by road, rail and sea as well as by freighter versions of high capacity fixed-wing aircraft, including interchange between these modes of transport.
2 The coding, Identification and marking of these containers shall be in accordance with ISO 6346. To denote the container as an air/surface (intermodal) container, the symbol illustrated in figure 1 shall be located at the top left-hand corner of the end walls and side walls and, as appropriate, on the roof, complying with the requirements of ISO 6346 (see annex B.3 of this International Standard).
NOTE — If any other markings are used on the container, they shall in no way interfere with the location of the marks required by ISO 6346.
