EN ISO 20844:2015 Petroleum and related products - Determination of the shear stability of polymer-containing oils using a diesel injector nozzle (ISO 20844:2015)
This International Standard specifies a method for assessing the resistance of mineral oils, synthetic oils and other polymer-containing fluids to shear stress when passing through a specified diesel fuel injector. Shear stability is measured as the change in viscosity of the fluid being tested resulting from polymer decomposition under stress. Typically, this International Standard is applied to hydraulic fluids of the HR and HV categories defined in ISO 6743-4 and specified in ISO 11158; However, under adapted conditions according to ISO 12922, it may also be used on flame-retardant hydraulic fluids in the HFA, HFB, HFC and HFD categories. No formal correlation has been determined between the viscosity loss or lack thereof using the methods of this International Standard and the viscosity loss or lack thereof for oils and liquids in practical use. However, the method offers standardized conditions for evaluating polymer stability while reducing thermal and oxidative stresses. It is commonly used by fluid and additive manufacturers and users as an aid in evaluating existing and potential formulations. NOTE Some specifications specify changes in properties other than viscosity; however, these are not covered by the procedures in this International Standard.
