This International Standard specifies the minimum essential safety requirements and test methods for protective clothing, including hoods, aprons, oversleeves and gaiters, intended to protect the wearer, including the head (hoods) and feet (gaiters), during welding and related processes with comparable to protect against risks. The scope of this International Standard includes only hoods and gaiters for the protection of the welder's head and feet. This International Standard does not specify requirements for foot protection, hand protection, face and/or eye protection. This type of protective clothing is intended to protect the wearer against weld spatter (small splashes of molten metal), short-term contact with flames, radiant heat from an electric arc used in welding and related processes, and provides a limited amount of electrical insulation under normal welding conditions compared to electrical conductors with direct voltage of up to approximately 100 V. Sweat, dirt or other contaminants can reduce the level of protection against short-term accidental contact with live electrical conductors up to this voltage. For adequate comprehensive protection against risks commonly encountered by welders, additional personal protective equipment (PPE) for the head, face, hands and feet covered by other standards should be worn. Guidance for selecting the type of welding protective clothing for different welding activities is detailed in Appendix A.
