Scope
This International Standard specifies three methods for determining the density of soil samples, which include: a) the method of measuring a geometrically regular sample (measuring method); b) the submersible weighing procedure; c) the process using liquid displacement. This International Standard applies within the scope of geotechnical investigations for the determination of soil densities in the laboratory. The measurement method is suitable for determining the density of a soil sample of regular shape, including samples prepared for other tests. The samples used are either rectangular prisms or cylinders with circular cross sections. In the immersion weighing method, the density of a sample of natural or compacted soil is determined by determining its mass in air and determining its mass immersed in liquid. The method can be used if lumps of material of a suitable size are available. In the liquid displacement method, the soil density of a sample is determined by determining the mass in air and determining the liquid displaced by the immersed mass. The method can be used if lumps of material of a suitable size are available. If the immersion weighing method or the liquid displacement method is used and if the liquid is likely to penetrate into the test sample (e.g. water), the test sample should be previously jacketed to prevent liquid penetration. The density of the soil is used to determine the stress from the soil's own weight as a function of depth. If necessary, the dry density of a sample can be calculated from the soil density and water content, if known. NOTE This International Standard meets the requirements for the determination of the density of soil samples in geotechnical investigations and tests in accordance with EN 1997-1 and
