Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for determining the amount of coke residue in the range from 0.10% (m/m) to 30.0% (m/m) remaining after evaporation and pyrolysis of mineral oil products under specified conditions. NOTE 1 The coke residue value serves as an approximation of the tendency of mineral oil products to form carbonaceous deposits under similar decomposition conditions and may be useful in evaluating the relative coke-forming tendencies of products of the same class. In this case, the results should be evaluated carefully. For products with a residue level of more than 0.10% (m/m), the test results are the same as those obtained using the Conradson method for determining coke residue (see ISO 6615) in the range from 0.10% (m/m) to 25.0% (m/m) can be obtained (see Appendix A for details). This International Standard also applies to mineral oil products consisting primarily of distillates and which may have a coke residue of less than 0.10% (m/m). For these, a distillation residue of 10% (V/V) is prepared before analysis using the procedure described in 7.3.1 and 7.3.2. Both ISO 6245 ash-forming components and non-volatile additives present in the sample contribute to the coke residue value and are included in the total reported value. NOTE 2 The presence of organic nitrates in certain distillate fuels results in unusually high coke residue levels. The presence of alkyl nitrate can be detected according to ISO 13759.
