This part of ISO 6506 specifies the procedures for the direct and indirect testing of hardness testing machines to determine Brinell hardness according to ISO 6506-1 and also specifies when these two types of testing are to be carried out. In the direct test, it is checked that individual machine performance parameters lie within specified limit ranges, while in the indirect test, hardness measurements are carried out on hardness reference plates calibrated according to ISO 6506-3 to test the functionality of the hardness testing machine. If a hardness testing machine is also used for other hardness testing procedures, it must be checked independently for each procedure. This part of ISO 6506 is applicable to fixed and portable hardness testing machines. For testing machines capable of meeting the specified force-time profile, direct testing of the force and time cycle may be modified using Appendix B.
