- This standard specifies the evaluation method for the antibacterial performance of antibacterially treated plastic products (including semi-finished products). This method is not applicable to the evaluation of the action and reproduction of bacteria on non-antimicrobial treated plastics. ISO 846 describes a number of test methods for evaluating the action and propagation of bacteria on plastics other than those covered by this standard. Interested parties can refer to ISO 846:1997 Method C. This standard does not involve secondary effects caused by antibacterial treatment, such as the prevention of biological corrosion and odor of plastics, nor is it suitable for evaluating the biodegradability of plastics. Biodegradation test can refer to ISO 14851, ISO 14852, ISO 14855 (see references) and other relevant standards. This standard does not deal with plastics used in construction, such as PVC or composite materials, unless they are antimicrobial treated in the same way. Any results obtained according to this standard shall refer to this standard and its test conditions. The results obtained by using this standard are the antibacterial performance obtained under the experimental conditions of this standard, and do not represent the antibacterial performance under other conditions such as temperature, humidity, bacteria and nutrition. Using this method for antibacterial testing requires a minimum dose of antimicrobial agents (chemicals) dissolved in the inoculum. It is recommended that testers consult ISO 7218 for microbiological procedures.
