Scope
This part of ISO 9241 makes recommendations to reduce the potential visual discomfort and visual fatigue experienced when viewing stereoscopic images under specified viewing conditions. Visual fatigue and discomfort could be caused by a stereoscopic optical stimulus of dissimilar images shown binocularly. This part of ISO 9241 is also applicable to end products of stereoscopic displays that are dependent on stereoscopic image content and stereoscopic displays when viewed under appropriate, specified conditions. The recommendations are therefore aimed at those responsible for the design, development and provision of stereoscopic image content and stereoscopic displays. NOTE 1 See Appendix B for appropriate viewing conditions. The recommendations in this part of ISO 9241 are applicable to stereoscopic displays such as those with glasses and autostereoscopic two-view displays, stereoscopic head-mounted displays and stereoscopic projectors. In addition, they are applicable to stereoscopic image content intended to be displayed on the above-mentioned stereoscopic displays, as well as to stereoscopic displays enabled by combinations of these images and displays. NOTE 2 Annex C provides numerical criteria as informative reference values. NOTE 3 Further guidance may need to be provided by referring to this part of ISO 9241 when requirements and recommendations specific to each type of stereoscopic image content and display become necessary. NOTE 4 ITU generally sets the standards for transmission. NOTE 5 ISO 9241-303:2011, Annex E, provides guidance for virtual displays intended for stereoscopic head-mounted displays.
