This International Standard specifies a method for detecting pores or other defects when testing metallic coatings that are not noticeably affected by hexacyanoferrate and chlorine ions during the test period and that are cathodic to iron and steel. This process is particularly suitable for thick, hard chrome coatings that improve wear resistance. NOTE 1 For some coating materials, the sodium chloride solution dissolves a very thin layer within 10 minutes of application (see 5.2.3). This dissolution causes possible porosity, ie pores covered by very thin layers, to sometimes be exposed again. Experience has shown that this possible porosity is often exposed again during actual use.
