Scope
This standard specifies performance requirements for neutron reference radiation used to calibrate neutron measuring instruments for radiation protection levels and determine their energy response. These neutron reference radiations range in energy from thermal energy to 20 MeV, with a maximum neutron fluence rate of 105 cm-2·s-1 (corresponding to a dose equivalent rate of 100 mSv·h-1 for neutrons with an energy of 1 MeV). This standard is applicable to calibrating neutron measuring instruments with "dose equivalent" and also applicable to calibrating neutron measuring instruments with "absorbed dose" and "kerma" of "standard human tissue". This standard specifies neutron reference radiation from the following three different sources: a. Neutrons produced by radionuclide sources, including neutrons moderated by moderators; b. Neutrons produced by nuclear reactions of charged particles in accelerators; c. Neutrons produced by nuclear reactors. Type a neutron sources are mainly used for routine calibration of instruments, and type b and type c neutron sources are mainly used to determine the energy response characteristics of instruments. This standard also provides conversion coefficients between the following four groups of values: Neutron fluence-dose equivalent; Neutron fluence-charged particle absorbed dose; Neutron fluence-photon absorbed dose; Neutron fluence-ratio Release kinetic energy. When calibrating neutron measuring instruments for radiation protection and determining their energy response characteristics, it is necessary to select appropriate reference radiation and corresponding conversion coefficients according to specific situations.
