This standard stipulates that the textile sample and the control standard sample are simultaneously exposed to nitrogen oxides produced by combustion gas smoke until the color of the control standard sample is equivalent to the color of the fading standard, and the gray scale card is used to evaluate the discoloration of the sample. If there is no change in the color of the sample after a period of smoking in the smoke or after one cycle, the smoke can be continued, either for a specified number of cycles or for a number of cycles sufficient to cause a certain degree of color change in the sample. This method is applicable to the determination of the resistance of the color of various textiles to smoke in an atmosphere containing nitrogen oxides produced by burning butane (chemically pure) or city gas except for loose fibers.
