Scope
This standard specifies the method for determining the total sulfur content of petroleum products by the burning lamp method. This standard is divided into direct combustion method and mixed combustion method. This standard applies to the determination of liquid petroleum products with a total sulfur content greater than 0.002% (m/m). When the sulfur content in the sample is lower than 0.002% (m/m), it can be determined by barium sulfate turbidimetry referring to Appendix B. The direct combustion method is used for the analysis of gasoline, diesel, naphtha, and other liquid petroleum products that burn completely in a wicked lamp. The mixed combustion method is used to analyze gas oil, distillate fuel oil, and petroleum products with high sulfur content. and many other petroleum products that cannot be completely combusted by direct combustion; it is not suitable for the analysis of heavy residual oils such as residual fuel oil as well as bitumen and coke. Correction is required for the small amount of acid formed when the lead antiknock in gasoline burns. Phosphorus compounds normally present in gasoline do not interfere with the determination. When the acidic or basic elements from other sources have a considerable concentration, there will be interference when the titration method is used for the determination without correction.
