- Scope
- This standard provides guidelines for the selection, use and result judgment of chemical indicators, which should be used in the definition, validation and routine monitoring and overall control of the sterilization process. A chemical indicator in this standard is a physical and/or chemical change in a substance that indicates its exposure to the sterilization process and is used to monitor one or more variables in the sterilization process. These chemical indicators are not dependent on the survival or inactivation of living organisms. This standard does not apply to indicators used in the process of physical removal of microorganisms (such as filtration). This standard also does not apply to indicators used in combined processes [such as washer-disinfectors or combined cleaning-in-place (CIP) and sterilization-in-place (SIP) processes].
