Scope
This International Standard specifies the general principles for the use of time-of-flight diffraction technology (TOFD) for the detection and sizing of inhomogeneities in low-alloy carbon steel components. The TOFD technique can also be applied to other types of materials if it is applied with the necessary consideration of the geometry, acoustic properties of the materials and test sensitivity. Although generally applicable to inhomogeneities in materials covered in ISO 16810, guidance for testing welds is also included. This path was chosen to clarify the positions of the ultrasound probe and the test directions. Unless otherwise specified in the reference documents, the minimum requirements of this International Standard shall apply. Unless expressly stated otherwise, this International Standard is applicable to the following product classes specified in ISO 16811: Class 1, without restrictions; Classes 2 and 3, with the restrictions stated. NOTE 1 See Section 9. Testing of Class 4 and Class 5 products requires special procedures, which are also noted. NOTE 2 See Section 9. NOTE 3 The TOFD techniques for inspecting welds are described in ISO 10863. NOTE 4 The relevant eligibility criteria are covered in ISO 15626.
