This International Standard describes two methods for determining the grain density of soil by calculation from the mass and volume of soil particles. The first method (4.1) is applicable to fine soil (< 2 mm diameter), and the second method (4.2) is applicable to soil with porous and non-porous gravel and stone content (> 2 mm diameter). Grain bulk density can be used to calculate the solids content and porosity of soil layers in conjunction with the ISO 11272 method.
