This part of ISO 11358 specifies general conditions for the thermogravimetric analysis of polymers. It is applicable to liquid or solid substances. The solid substances may be in the form of pellets, granules or powder. The method can also be used to examine finished parts reduced to a suitable test body size. Thermogravimetry can be used to determine the temperatures and decomposition rates of polymers and to simultaneously measure the amount of volatile components, additives and/or fillers contained therein. Thermogravimetric measurements may be carried out using a dynamic method (mass change as a function of temperature or time under programmed conditions) or an isothermal method (mass change as a function of time at a constant temperature). Thermogravimetric measurements may also be carried out using different test atmospheres, for example to separate decomposition in an inert atmosphere from oxidative decomposition.
