This International Standard specifies a method for determining the hardening exponent n in tensile testing of flat products (strip and sheet) made of metallic materials. The method is only applicable for the plastic region of the stress/strain curve, in which the curve is continuous and monotonous (see 7.4). For materials with a jagged stress/strain curve in the hardening area (materials with the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, e.g. AlMg alloys), the automated determination (linear regression of the logarithmic true stress over the logarithmic true plastic strain, see 7.7) should be used to obtain reproducible results.
