This International Standard specifies laboratory methods for determining the water retention capacity of soil. This International Standard applies only to drying or desorption curve measurements. Four methods are described to cover the full range of soil water pressures as follows: a) Method using sand, kaolin or ceramic suction tables to determine matrix pressures from 0 kPa to -50 kPa; b) Method in which a porous plate and a burette apparatus are used to determine matrix pressures from 0 kPa to -20 kPa; c) Method in which a compressed gas and pressure plate extractor are used to determine matrix pressures from -5 kPa to -1500 kPa; d) Method in which a compressed gas and pressure membrane cells are used to determine matrix pressures from -33 kPa to -1500 kPa. Instructions for selecting the most appropriate procedure for each individual case are included.
