This part of ISO 6508 specifies two different methods for testing hardness testing machines (direct and indirect) for determining Rockwell hardness according to ISO 6508-1:2015 in conjunction with a method for testing Rockwell hardness indenters. Direct verification is applied to determine whether the main parameters of the machine function, such as: B. the applied force, the penetration depth measurement and the timing of the test cycles comply with the specified limit deviations. Indirect testing uses a series of calibrated hardness reference plates to determine how well the testing machine is able to measure a material of known hardness. The indirect method can be used on its own for regular routine checks of the machine by the user. If a hardness testing machine is also to be used for other hardness testing procedures, it must be independently tested for each of these procedures. This part of ISO 6508 is applicable to stationary and portable hardness testing machines. It should be noted that only those made from a tungsten carbide mixture are considered standard penetration balls for the Rockwell test. Steel penetrating balls may only be used if they comply with ISO 6508-1:2015, Annex A.
