This International Standard specifies methods for the determination of components in plastics that can be extracted using hot, organic liquids just below their boiling temperatures. For a special case, a so-called cold extraction process is given in Appendix B. The extractable components can consist of monomers, oligomers, polymers, plasticizers, stabilizers, etc. The type and amount of extractable components influence the properties of the plastics. The extraction liquid to be used depends on the type of plastic and the purpose of the determination. The extractable amounts of certain components are often not recorded quantitatively in the sense of analytical chemistry. This International Standard is not applicable to plastics that come into contact with food or drinking water. Many countries have special regulations for these plastics. In most cases, in order to test plastics in accordance with these requirements, test methods other than those specified in this International Standard should be used. The test methods of this International Standard are not intended to be used for migration testing.
