Scope
It is recognized that small ships, which are usually made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP), may lack reflected signals for radar signals. With radar being used as the most important means of observation during ship navigation, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires small ships with a gross tonnage of 150 tons or less to be equipped with a radar reflector to improve radar visibility by increasing radar reflection. This standard is IMO MSC. It specifies the minimum requirements for radar reflectors used for the purpose of increasing the signal reflected from small vessels as required by Resolution 164(78). This standard covers the fabrication, performance, testing, inspection and installation of radar reflectors. Specifications are specified. There are two types of radar reflectors (passive and active). Active reflectors are electromagnetic devices and passive reflectors are mechanical devices. This standard covers passive reflectors.?
