This standard specifies the following two methods for spectroscopically measuring the alkaloid content remaining in cigarette filters:
——Direct method - Indirect method This method is applied to cigarettes with filters attached. The direct method should be used except in cases where this method cannot be used because it is difficult to completely recover alkaloids remaining in the filter from the filter constituents (e.g., some types of carbon filters). The indirect method cannot be applied to cigarettes with perforated or porous filter tipping wraps. This standard is not applicable to filters that irreversibly filter nicotine and to filters using perforated or natural pore paper.
